DIALOGUES IN ARCHAEOLOGY – VOLOS | 2019
1st circular
The next meeting of the ‘Archaeological Dialogues’, this dynamic collectivity, attempting to lay the foundations of an interdisciplinary collaboration focusing on the importance and social role of antiquities and cultural heritage since 2015, will be held in Volos, from 31 May to 2 June 2019.
Rather than a conventional conference, the Dialogues form an institution with theoretical and practical foundations, open to archaeologists, specialists and non specialists from various fields, including anthropologists, social scientists, historians, art historians, curators, architects, literary critics, artists, filmmakers and anyone else, who wishes to be part of a variety of related actions in the urban space of Volos and its surrounding area.
The organization of the Dialogues, supported by the University of Thessaly and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Magnesia, aspires to include thematic sessions, open debates, exhibitions, art installations, acts, and movie screenings. Moreover, the Dialogues are seeking for the active participation of students and young researchers, beyond any hierarchies and clichés.
The appropriation of antiquity nowadays, the relations between archaeology and contemporary art, psychoanalysis and literature, issues of education, performance, cultural management, developments in archaeological theory, notions of space, time and social identity in archaeological research, critical history and political economy of archaeological and museum practice, ethnographic approaches of material culture are some of the subject matters treated by the participants in the Dialogues of Athens (2015, 2018), Mytilene (2016) and Ioannina (2017).
More specifically, the Dialogues focused on ‘Dialogues with great (not exclusively archaeological) importance’ in 2015, on ‘Boundaries and Borders’ in 2016, on ‘Movements: places, memories, materialities’ in 2017 and on ‘Poleis: urban landscape in 2018. The ‘Dialogues in Archaeology’ of 2019, inspired by the social realities of the city-port that will accommodate them, Volos, will concentrate on ‘ThalassoGeografies’, with the aim of highlighting the various aspects of human relations with the sea.
The Steering Committee of the ‘Dialogues in Archaeology’ and the Volos Organizing Committee invite the submission of proposals for thematic round tables, sessions, workshops and other collective activities related not only to the notion of ‘ThalassoGeographies’, accommodated at Volos in 2019, but also to the wider topics, covered by the collectivity, aiming at nourishing a creative exchange of ideas and experiences concerning the material and intangible imprints of the past in the present.
The proposals of thematic sessions, followed by a summary of 300 words, must be sent, by the 13th of January 2019, to ad2019@uth.gr. Besides ‘ThalassoGeographies’, which form the main axis of the Dialogues of 2019, proposals for round discussion tables and sessions of related papers within the wider frame of the Dialogues in Archaeology.
A second call for individual papers will follow in early 2019.
